John Lennon (Linocut Print)
John Lennon (9th October 1940 – 8th December 1980)
I carved this Linocut on the day that should have been John Lennon’s 80th birthday, on 9th October 2020.
On 8th December 1980, Lennon was shot dead as he returned home to his New York apartment. Eleven-year-old me remembers watching TV and being shocked by the news. Sure, The Beatles broke up the same month I came kicking and screaming into the world, but they were indisputably the most famous band to have ever existed, and Lennon continued to make records and feature on ‘Top Of The Pops’. Why would anyone want to put an end to the life of such a genius in such a shocking way? It was beyond my comprehension.
John Lennon has now been dead for as long as he was alive, yet his legacy lives on. In my representation of him I have printed him upon a green background, that being his favourite colour. I intend to carve Linocuts of all four Beatles and mount them as a quadrant, so they will be available to buy either as a set, or individually, as with this one. black on white.
