*Previously on sale for £45, now £25!*
A hand-carved, hand-printed Linocut Print, limited to only 200 editions.
BACKGROUND:
Florence Nightingale was born 200 years ago on the day I created this linocut print, on 12th May, in Florence, Italy. She is widely considered as being the founder of modern nursing. International Nurses’ Day is observed annually on this day to commemorate her birth, acknowledge the impact she had upon healthcare, and celebrate the important role of nurses.
Nightingale is most well known for her role in the Crimean War, in which she organised care for British and Allied wounded soldiers. It was here that she became known as the “Lady with the Lamp”.
In 1860, Nightingale established the first ever scientifically-based nursing school, the Nightingale School of Nursing, at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London. The Florence Nightingale Museum is now located at St. Thomas’. She also was instrumental in setting up training for midwives and nurses in workhouse infirmaries.
Florence Nightingale died on 13th August 1910 in London, aged 90, three years after being the first woman to have ever been awarded the Order of Merit.
Today, in response to the COVID-19 epidemic the UK, seven critical care temporary hospitals have been set up by NHS England. They have been named Nightingale Hospitals.
Happy 200th Birthday, Flo!
