Amelia Earhart 1897-1937
“Women, like men, should try to do the impossible. And when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others”.
Amelia Earhart was born in Kansas on 24th July 1897 & defied gender stereotypes from an early age, taking on activities such as basketball & auto-repair training. In 1921, Earhart started flying lessons, & she obtained the National Aeronautics Association licence the same year. She went to to achieve a lot of firsts in her short lifetime:
- In 1922 she became the first woman to fly solo above 14,000 feet.
- 10 years later in 1932, she famously became the first woman (& only the second person, after Charles Lindbergh) to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
- In response to this, she was the first woman to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross- a military honour awarded for “heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight”.
- Later that same year, Earhart also made the first solo, non-stop flight across the US by a woman.
- In 1935, she was the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to the US mainland.
In 1937, Earhart attempted to be the first pilot ever to circumnavigate the globe. She flew a twin-engined Lockheed 10E Electra and left California on 1 June, flying down South America, across the Atlantic to Africa, then east to South East Asia. By 29 June she had reached New Guinea, having already flown 22k miles & with only 7k miles remaining to complete her circumnavigation. Sadly she was not to make it, & after a 2-week search she was declared lost at sea somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. The plane’s wreckage was never found.
Earhart achieved many firsts in her short life, & not all of them merely firsts for women. She also helped form, & was the first president of, the Ninety-Nines - an international organisation for female pilots, which still exists & represents women from 44 countries today.
For all these reasons, I chose to honour her during Women’s History Month, & specifically on International Women’s Day 2019.
